Paula Shore: In Memoriam

Paula Shore, whom the PAULA's Test commemorates, was a wife, mother, educator and assistant office manager at her husband's dermatology practice in Rockville, Maryland. She established and maintained a recall system to facilitate effective screening of patients at high risk of melanoma and other skin malignancies. Under her watch, not a single patient in the program died of any form of skin cancer in more that 13 years due to early detection. Despite a healthy lifestyle, Paula herself died of lung cancer in 2005. At the time, no generally accepted screening test for the disease existed. It is sincerely hoped that the use of the new test, like screening for melanoma, will help prevent future tragedies like Paula's.
